GOLD Certification Process
Graduate Opportunities to Learn Data Science (GOLD) is a program for SFSU Biology and Chemistry masters students to be able to earn a graduate certificate in Data Science for Biology and Chemistry. To receive your official certificate follow these steps:
1) Certificate Admission: Fill out Certificate Admissions Application for Continuing SF State Graduate Students. This process will allow us to officially keep track of the students and their progress.
2) Certificate Awarding: Once you have completed the course requirements, you fill out and file the Certificate Approved Program (CAP) form.

Certificate Admission Process
Current graduate students (Master’s program) who are interested in the certificate program fill out Certificate Admissions Application for Continuing SF State Graduate Students, this process will allow us to officially keep track of these students and their progress. In the form request admission for the current semester in the "Data Science for Scientists Certificate".
Biology Department Instructions
Biology Department Instructions
- Students submit the application form to Giovanna Tuccori ([email protected]) in the Biology Department office and she will initiate the Docusign process.
- The Graduate Coordinator (currently Diana Chu) signs and forwards the form to Khaled Ezzat ([email protected]) in the Division of Graduate Studies.
- Students submit the application form to Graduate Coordinator (currently Andrew Ichimura: [email protected]) and he will initiate the Docusign process.

Certificate Award Process and CAP form:
After completing ALL the certificate requirements, fill out the Certificate Approved Program (CAP) form only (See below for Chemistry CAP form).
For most students, the elective is CSC 306, other options are listed here. Under certificate advisor, list Pleuni Pennings. In the section asking for a " level of writing competency in the following manner (required)", you do not need to check any box and can leave this area blank.
There is a $7 fee that must also be paid by the student. Students pay for the CAP fee through the Gateway- Student Center. Instructions to pay online can be found here: https://grad.sfsu.edu/content/pay-graduate-fees-online
Students attach an electronic copy of their payment receipt to their CAP form for submission to their department.

The forms will then be forwarded to Khaled Ezzat ([email protected]) in the Division of Graduate Studies. Student will be notified through Docusign that the approval process has been completed.

FAQ
What if I didn’t do the Certificate Admission Process paperwork and I am completing the program?
Can I apply for the certificate while I am finishing courses for the program?
After I submit the form, what happens? Do I get a certificate mailed to me? Do I get notification that my form has been approved? How long does that take?
I am confused and need support. Who can I talk to?
- No problem. Complete Step 1 for the Admission Process as soon as possible before completing the program.
Can I apply for the certificate while I am finishing courses for the program?
- No. You must complete all of the courses, then apply for the certificate. This allows the University to most efficiently check you have completed the requirements to issue your certificate.
After I submit the form, what happens? Do I get a certificate mailed to me? Do I get notification that my form has been approved? How long does that take?
- Once the form gets processed (about two weeks), it will be posted on your transcript. You will also get an email a notification. A physical certificate is mailed upon approval. Typically, it takes 8-10 weeks for students to receive their physical certificate.
